Janet Peterson Blackman

                         Feb. 11, 1949 – Dec 2, 2002


Jan was born on February 11, 1949 to Wayne and Arlyce Peterson in Pierre. She attended Theodore F. Riggs High School, was a member of the cheerleading team graduating in 1967, and continued her education at the University of South Dakota. While there, she met Donald Blackman of Sioux Falls and was married in Denver, Colorado on November 18, 1972. Together they traveled extensively in the United States and Canada where they eventually made their home in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

 

Jan then traveled to the Island of Kauai where she made her home with her special friend, Gail Powell. While in Hawaii, she devoted her life to helping others before returning to Pierre, SD in 1999. She made her home with her mother, Arlyce Peterson, and helped with the care of her older sister Judy Pfab, who resides in Mary House in Pierre, SD. Despite her own poor health, her passion in life was helping and caring for other people. Jan’s deep faith and love for her Lord was guidance in her daily life in the compassion she had for other people.

Jan was devoted to the care of her sister, Judy, and loved visiting with the other residents at Mary House. She became involved with the Central Teen Court program in Pierre, being invited to participate by her friend, Noreen Plummage.

 

Janet (Jan) R. Peterson Blackman, 53, Pierre, SD, passed away December 2, 2002.

 

Jan is survived by her mother, Arlyce Peterson and special friend, Cecil Watters of Pierre; brother Jeffrey Peterson of Sartell, Mn.; sisters Judy Pfab of Pierre and Laura Gates and special friend Mark Tassler of Sioux Falls; and extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. 

Jan was preceded in death by her father, Wayne L. Peterson, of Pierre; her husband, Donald Blackman of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; cousin Kenneth J. Peterson of Denver, Colorado.
